On Tuesday, May 24th, Chief of Department Justin Jerrick and Explorer Post Advisor Daniel Mochon held an informational and recruitment event for the re-launch of the Hughsonville Fire Department Fire Explorer Program. Parents and youths were invited to the Hughsonville Fire Station to learn about our organization and the Explorer Program. At the conclusion of the event, the Hughsonville Fire Department has seven youths signed up for the Explorer Post Program.

Our Fire Explorer Program provides a unique opportunity for youths to interact and learn in a safe environment through classroom and hands-on training. This program is through the Boy Scouts of America and run by members of the Hughsonville Fire Department. The members volunteer their time to provide this special opportunity for our youths, with hopes of them joining their local volunteer fire departments at the age of 16 or 18. The program is designed to give youths the opportunity to educate themselves on the basic fire and emergency services techniques such CPR, first aid, search and rescue, hose line advancement, and forcible entry. This program will teach youths the importance of leadership and the chain of command in fire and emergency services.

The Explorer Post is being led by Lead Advisor Daniel Mochon. Dan started out with the Hughsonville Fire Department as the Lead Post Advisor of the Hughsonville Fire Departments Boy Scout Troop 145, which was charted in 2018. Since then, he has passed the reigns to a new post advisor and will lead this re-chartered Fire Explorer Post alongside firefighters of the Hughsonville Fire Department.

The Hughsonville Fire Department has had great success with our fire explorer post since its introduction in the early 2000’s. Since the introduction of the program, our organization has had three fire explorers join our fire company as firefighters, and they have risen through our ranks to become Chief Officers, such as Chief Justin Jerrick and 1st Assistant Chief Paul Rogers.
